The subject exists in a world of chaos and violence. Though she is ultimately a product of her environment, she has the freedom to differentiate herself from the grotesque reality that shaped her. This reality mirrors the cold indifference of the blood-stained, cemented urban landscape surrounding the subject. Demoralized and jaded, she could easily dissolve into her surroundings, too tired and self-defeatist to move beyond the familiarity and comfort of “home.” The choice is hers. For me, the subject is strengthened and empowered, rather than governed, by her callous conditioning. Everyday, she chooses to wake up in a world that is tailored to her fearless vision and intent. Her choice is an active, ongoing process that requires no shortage of perseverance and fortitude. Apathy cannot exist here.
