Acrylic on Canvas. 18″x 24″ (SOLD)
I began this painting knowing I wanted to use the colors gold and red, a resplendently rich color combination that conveys both dramatic grandeur and resilient strength.
The subject of this painting is burning. Whether the fire is an exterior factor, or that of her making, I have not determined. In one glance, I see her lit by her own intensity, her own power. In another glance, I see her defying circumstance with a steady gaze, though dissolving into flame.
What does it mean to burn alive? Is it the eternal condition of the damned, the destiny of the wicked? Or, is it the ultimate state of bliss: to be lit on fire, intoxicated by passion and submerged in a state of perpetual desire? We often faint from acting upon our true desires, either for fear of judgment, or for fear of failure. But, if we could continuously seize the opportunity to live in fire–living with the knowledge and aptitude to do what we love–is that not the greatest state of being?
I’d like to share with you the touching words I received from the amazing woman who purchased my painting:
I purchased this piece with the understanding once I received it, it would be mine. I now know that what this piece conveys may not be owned. I only know that I am the privileged individual that gets to display this, as it needs to speak to whomever it comes into contact with. Some days I see her on fire and others I see her environment on fire. Nonetheless her eyes do not change. It is if she is so strong it doesn’t matter which it is, she is ok. She is calm, strong, consistent. This piece of work completed by Ms. Sabrina is by far one of the most beautiful things I have held with my two hands. She shall accompany me in all of the rest of my life’s journeys, growing pains and sorrows. I am forever grateful for what this piece of art has provided for me, from a level of eroticism to humble comfort, and look forward to purchasing more in the future.
Much love,
Helena Popejoy
