I was recently asked which of my paintings is my favorite, and I said this one. Here’s why. She embodies the complexity of femaleness. She is open yet guarded, daring yet vulnerable, impassioned yet inhibited, raw yet refined. There’s immense beauty in these contradictions. Her penetrating glare counters her body position. She is hungry for something within reach, though not quite ready to grasp it.

Over the years, I have had the pleasure of watching this young artist blossom into this mixed medium pallet. She continually amazes and inspires through the depth of character development. At first glance, the woman’s body position implies shame or guilt. That she has wronged herself. Looking closer, we contrast this level of self deprivation to the depths of the female’s eyes – strong and full of a past unknown to the audience. Yet, these eyes tell a story. More so a statement that she will not be restrained by the walls that envelope her. Her inner soul will continue to trudge forward to the beat of her a tonal drum. Her views, beliefs, and aspirations clashing with the expectations of those she loves so deeply. The color choice by the artist further implies a level of somber. Blues and grays give additional back story to this candid moment. A place of internal strife haunts her, but yet she is a warrior. Evidenced by the 6 markings across the back and shoulder are key holes that this woman is a survivor. In total, the honesty of one’s soul is realized through this culmination of a piece.
