Medium: Mixed Media on Canvas
The subject roams the Earth, surveying the natural rhythms and cycles of her territory. She unapologetically and impartially facilitates balance where balance is needed. She travels with an entourage of cougars, falcons and bison, which helps her beget equilibrium. When necessary, she intervenes in the forms of wind, water and fire. Though she has been cursed and branded a demon, she has neither repudiated the slanders nor avenged her assailants. She understands that these petty insults are nothing but the symptoms of fear, borne out of ignorance and superstition. She has walked the Earth for millennia. Once worshipped, then condemned, and now forgotten, she continues to roam the sphere, performing her eternal duties, indifferent to the currents of the temporary inhabitants.
A Note on the Process:
This color pallet is inspired by the fall season (see below). This painting honors the cycles of the natural world as well as those of a woman’s body. I used braided twine to texture the subject’s hair. The twine is also emblematic of wheat. I embellished the headdress with cardboard, cut in the shapes of leaves.
