Symphony in Red for the Living reminds us that love does not exist in the placid bosom of the hearth. It dies there. It thrives in a tumultuous labyrinth, an enchanting forest that has no escape, no end. Radiating with the inextinguishable heat of desire and resounding with the pulsating drumming of the heart, the labyrinth is the birthplace of Inanna herself. Here heaven and hell bed each other, birthing into the word the feverish elation we call ecstasy.
Symphony in Red in an ode to all those who have loved unconditionally, wholly and without hesitation. It is an ode to those that have been set ablaze by love’s magical properties, intoxicated by its power, and burned by its scorching touch. Those that have approached Inanna’s altar without armor, barefoot and naked in her almighty presence, are blessed, saved and reborn.
A Note on the Process: The texture of the background is achieved by layering wet unryu paper onto the freshly painted canvas. I used my hands to further enhance the background. The subject’s cloak is composed of fish net, tissue paper, and fabric.
